Can a student complete your program by distance? Yes, all of our principal courses are offered face to face and by audio conference/internet. All the core courses are offered in the summer via both methods.
What about the Superintendent courses? Because of the small number of students these courses are only offered by audio conference, and on a set schedule. Contact the department if you have questions.
If I am taking a class, does that mean I am enrolled in the Program? No. Graduate students may take Ed Leadership core theory courses (up to 9 credits), before being formally admitted, but they may not take any of the field experience (internship) courses until admission and the four core classes are completed.
If I am pursuing a certificate or an endorsement, do I need to apply to the UAA Graduate School and the UAA College of Education's Educational Leadership Program? Yes. Students enrolling in a certificate or M.Ed. Program, must apply to both places.
How do I know if I have been formally admitted to the Ed Leadership Program? You will receive a formal letter from UAA's Enrollment Services, which tells you whether you have been denied admittance, conditionally admitted, or unconditionally admitted.
Is the tentative program plan I worked up with my advisor the same as an official program plan? No. A tentative program plan is an informal plan that is developed early in the process when the applicant and instructor meet to draft out what it will take to become certified. Later in the process, as the applicant gets closer to internship this plan is revised to reflect all current course work and is converted into an Official Program Plan. These plans are signed by your graduation committee and become the plan which will be checked before graduation. It is very important to make sure you have a current Official Program Plan in your file, or it can affect starting your internship as well as your graduation. You can contact your advisor or the program assistant to find out if you have a current plan on file.
Who is my advisor? Your advisor will be assigned to you upon acceptance into the program. For initial advising before admittance, contact the department.
Are there deadline dates for comps and graduation? Absolutely. Don't let yourself get caught! Comprehensive Exams are given on the second Saturday in March, July, and November. Applications are due approximately 30 days before the exam. Check with the department approximately six weeks in advance of the exam to make sure you don't miss the deadline. Deadlines for graduation are:
- September 15 for Spring
- March 1 for Summer
- May 1 for Fall
What is the EDL surcharge for, and is it a one time fee? In 1998 the University of Alaska Board of Regents gave the statewide mission for delivering principal and superintendent preparation programs to the Educational Leadership Program at UAA. In 1999 the Board of Regents approved a 50% surcharge to EDL tuition. The revenues generated by the surcharge cover costs associated with the delivery of the statewide program, including faculty and support staff; travel to supervise interns, attend team meetings, and teach course work; covers each intern's registration fees to the October State Principal's Conference, and the development and maintenance of on-line course work. It is charged any time a course is taken with the EDL prefix.
